Dear Gabriel,
We are getting ready to leave Idaho and go back to Southern Utah. We have been up here for a month! Already I am getting that 'missing feeling'. My heart just aches when I think about not being around my family very much for the next few months. Then... I just count my blessings and thank the Lord for being able to see them as much as I do.
How do some women do it? Military wives who go months and months without their husbands. The missing feeling must over take them. My friend who permanently lost her parents and can never go back to South America. The missing feeling must engulf her for her home land! Children who go months and years without seeing their mom or dad because of abandonment... I can't imagine what that missing feeling is like.
The missing feeling is an amazing reminder of everything I HAVE. I am so grateful to have a family that is so close. I am so grateful to have siblings that love me and I love them. I am so grateful to have parents who encourage me no matter what. I am so grateful to have a family who loves my husband so unconditionally. I am just so grateful that I actually feel the 'missing feeling' because I love them so much. Some people never feel that feeling simply because of grudges, pride and greed.
Remember, the missing feeling is a signal that there really is something GREAT about a relationship. When I miss them and they miss me, I truly know we love each other.
I love you,
Your Mom

Most Desirable Thing
Dear Gabriel,
I think the most desirable thing a man can do is play with his own child. After watching your dad play with you, hug you, love you and carry you everywhere, I just want him more and more! Remember this as you get older... any woman loves seeing a handsome strong man become a boy again because of just relaxing with and playing with a child.
Your dad missed you so much being away. Since he got up to Idaho with us he has just loved you more and more. I am so grateful that you have a dad who takes his role in your life so seriously. I am so grateful for him... especially because he loves you so much.
I love you,
Your Mom

Everyone Has A Cause
Dear Gabriel,
So it sounds weird, but I was caught up tonight watching 'Whale Wars'. No, I am not a crazy tree hugger who never shaves my legs because I am want to be 100% natural. Your Uncle Jeff has been into it and he convinced me to watch a few episodes. I thought a lot of things (good and bad), but mostly what I was reminded of is this... Everyone has a cause, a purpose and a passion.
Even though I would never be passionate about fighting Japanese whaling ships, I was reminded of the things in my life that I would dedicate my life fighting for and that I HAVE dedicate my life to. More important than ever before we must all understand our cause, purpose and passion and have the guts to fight for it.
As you grow your opinions and decisions will be different... some I will agree with and some I will not. But no matter what, I want you to always have a cause, purpose and passion. Don't just let life happen to you... You must happen to life!
I love you,
Your Mom

Being Brand New
Dear Gabriel,
Your cousin got here a few days ago and I was able to be there when he was born. I think seeing child be born is one of the closest ways to be aware of the spiritual world around us. The spirit of that little baby was penetrable for everyone in the room.
It reminded me of when you were born. Brand new to the world. Brand new to life. Brand new to this adventure and experience we all get to live through. Brand new to your future decisions. Brand new to your health and strength. Brand new... to everything! Brand new babies are the closest we can get to being around angels.
You are an angel to me. Being around you and other brand new souls to this world reminds me of my life and what kind of legacy I will leave... and that hopefully I can be an angel to others around me, even though I have a few more years, a few more wrinkles and am not brand new any more.
I love you,
Your Mom

America Has Changed The World
Dear Gabriel,
People who think this country and society is brutal... or that Europe takes better care of their people... or that only highly educated people have the right to decide for the majority of people living here... I must say a few things!
This country has changed the history of the world. The republic has allowed more freedom for more people in the history of the world than any other. If anyone thinks another country takes better care of their people, then I ask you, "Have you ever really lived in another country? If you think they take better care of you... THEN LEAVE!"
It just makes my blood boil when ANYONE rants and raves about how terrible America is. To those people I say, "You have no idea what it is like to live OUTSIDE of America". Those who have lived outside of here know that we are blessed beyond measure, that we have more opportunity than any other place, that more people are enjoying the blessing of freedom because they have been able to come here and take part.
I know you are going to grow up in a time when the Constitution is completely forgotten, but I hope you don't forget. I am going to do the best I can so that you don't forget. No matter what, remember, that America has truly changed the world!
I love you,
Your Mom

Perspective Moment
Dear Gabriel,
I have a story for you.
This past weekend our car broke down while we were on our way up to Idaho. We made it up here and were in 6 cars in 24 hours. Amazing friends and family dropped their plans to make sure we got where we needed to be when we needed to be there... Along the way I had a 'perspective moment' I need to talk with you about.
When we started out on our '6 car' journey, the car was about one mile out of Cedar City when we had the problem. We limped into town and made it slowly to the Tunex there. It was a little bit after hours, but they were still there and said they would look at it. I sat in the Tunex show room for a while waiting.
While I was there a man was also there with his little boy. He was about 6-7 years old. The boy was just going crazy with energy and quite out of control. He was pretending to be a dinosaur. It was obvious the man was having a hard day and didn't give much attention to keeping his child calmed down. The man's energy was quite low. Many people around were getting quite irritated with him. At first I found myself getting irritated, so I started talking to the boy and getting to know him, which helped to ease any irritation I was feeling.
Well, after about 1/2 hour the man left with his boy and the Tunex guy, Charlie, started looking at my car. He showed me the issue and told me it was going to be about $300 - $400 to fix the car and we couldn't take it anywhere. This was hard for me to hear, especially because we definitely do not have that extra money to fix the car. We had to get on the road to make it to some business appointments. At that point I started making calls to figure out our traveling accomodations. After about another 1/2 hour there weren't very many people around and Charlie and I started talking.
I thanked him for his help and for taking me after hours. Then he said, " No problem. We would have been here anyway. We just got another call about a van breaking down outside of town. Funny enough it is the same van as that man had that was here. I felt so bad for him." Then Charlie got very quiet and said... "His van broke down on his way to California to bury his wife."
Immediately my heart was just stung. I said, "Wow... compared to that man, I am doing pretty good."
Amazing how the Lord helps to put things in perspective very well. I will fish around and find $400 that I don't have any day - as long as I can keep your dad, you and other family around. It was what I call a 'perspective moment'.
Needless to say, no matter how many cars we got in and out of, no matter how upset you got because you had to get back in the car seat AGAIN, no matter how much I missed being around your dad, no matter what came and went I thought about that man. Comparatively, no matter what I was doing pretty good.
Look for 'perspective moments' in your life. They will help you be grateful for anything you are going through.
I love you,
Your Mom
